Sharing knowledge and developing expertise are an important part of improving palliative and end-of-life care for babies, children and young people.
A teaching hospice
Rainbows provides specialist education and training for healthcare professionals, students and our own staff, helping build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to provide high-quality children’s palliative care.
Our ambition is to be recognised as a teaching hospice, working alongside universities and health and social care organisations to develop learning opportunities and share our specialist expertise across the East Midlands and beyond.
Training healthcare professionals
Rainbows delivers specialist children’s palliative care training across the East Midlands, sharing the expertise of our clinical teams with professionals working in health and care.
Training includes practical, scenario-based learning and covers areas such as palliative care, symptom management, end-of-life and bereavement care. Our education programme continues to develop as we explore new learning opportunities, including simulation and accredited training.
Supporting the next generation
We work with universities across the East Midlands to give students opportunities to learn about children’s palliative care in practice.
Rainbows provides placements for students including pre-registration nurses, nursing associates and physiotherapists, giving them experience of specialist care and the opportunity to learn from our multidisciplinary teams.
Our growing relationships with universities and other education providers are also helping us strengthen children’s palliative care education and develop Rainbows’ role as a teaching hospice.
Developing our own staff
Learning continues throughout a career at Rainbows. New clinical colleagues are supported through a comprehensive induction and clinical education programme, while newly qualified nurses can undertake a year-long preceptorship programme.
We also provide ongoing professional development, clinical competencies and opportunities for colleagues to develop their practice, including through apprenticeships and advanced practice.
