Music therapy
Music has a powerful way of reaching people, in body and in emotion. At Rainbows, music therapy plays a real role in everything from pain management to physiotherapy and breathing programmes, and it gives children a way to express themselves, connect and simply enjoy the moment.
How music therapy helps
Our music therapist uses music as something children can feel as well as hear, with the vibrations of different instruments used to stimulate, relax and engage. Gentle breathwork gives children a way to voice how they’re feeling and to build a connection with the therapist, and sessions can also include songwriting, music writing and creating playlists, all shaped around each child.
Alongside the therapist, a music therapist assistant offers music-making for individuals and groups, often working with other specialists to create rich, multi-sensory sessions.
Memories in Heartbeats
For some antenatal and neonatal families, our music therapist offers something truly special. Memories in Heartbeats combines a recording of a baby’s heartbeat with music, creating a memory track for families to keep and treasure.
Music wherever it’s needed
Our music team runs sessions throughout the hospice, including in our wonderful music room. They also bring music therapy into the community, through our outreach service and community hubs, and regularly visit children we care for on hospital wards, bringing a little of the Rainbows experience to them wherever they are.
