Referring a child
Who is eligible to access hospice services?
Rainbows supports families that include a child or young person who has a confirmedlife limiting or life threatening condition. Children and young people can access the hospice if they:-
- Have a degenerative condition that will lead to their death before or during early adulthood;
- Are currently palliative and/or are likely to die within the next two years;
- Have a current oncology diagnosis;
- Are dependent on life sustaining ventilation
The service is offered to children and young people from birth – 30 years, living within the East Midlands
Referrals can be made by anyone involved with the child and family, including the family themselves. We’ll then obtain the information we need from the child’s/young person’s GP and consultant. One of our nurses will visit the family to tell them about us and learn more about the child/young person.
All referrals are reviewed by our admissions panel which meets monthly. A decision is made on whether the family will be accepted.
All the children and young people who access Rainbows will be reviewed biannually to ensure they continue to meet the hospice criteria.
Emergency referrals for palliative or end-of-life care can be made at any time. We do everything we can to respond very quickly – in fact, we can facilitate support and an admission within a few hours in these circumstances.
