Specialist play
Play is one of the most important parts of childhood, and every child deserves the chance to enjoy it, whatever their abilities or medical needs. At Rainbows, our play specialists use play to help babies, children and young people have fun, express themselves, learn and grow, and simply be children.
Play that’s made for every child
Play does so much more than pass the time. It helps children develop and hold on to skills, make choices, build confidence and experience new things, all through activities they genuinely enjoy. For children with complex needs, it can also be a powerful way to communicate and to feel a sense of freedom and control.
Every session is led by a qualified play specialist and shaped around the individual child, taking account of their age, abilities, development, interests and the way they like to communicate. Whether a child wants something lively and stimulating or gentle and calming, play is always built around them.
Play for the whole family
Play at Rainbows isn’t just for the child we care for. Sessions can be one-to-one, or bring in brothers, sisters and the whole family, giving everyone the chance to relax, connect and enjoy time together. It’s a moment for families simply to be together, away from the routines of care.
Play can take place at our hospice, at home, or out in the community through our hubs, wherever a child feels most comfortable.
Making memories to treasure
Our play specialists also help families create precious keepsakes and memories together. From hand and foot casting to other personal memory-making activities, these are moments and mementos that families can hold on to and treasure for years to come.
