Derby’s Mayor takes on Derby Abseil

Derby’s daredevil Deputy Mayor is aiming to raise thousands for us by taking on an epic challenge.

After climbing 189 steps, Councillor Ged Potter will abseil down the 212ft tower at Derby Cathedral on Saturday 19 October with his 16-year-old daughter, Isobel. They aim to raise £2,750 for our hospice.

The Allestree Councillor has enlisted the help of all the pubs in his constituency, along with some city centre venues, to help with his fundraising.

“When I first heard about Rainbows, I thought what a great charity,” said the father of four. “Not only is it a hospice for children and young people with life-limiting illnesses, it is a place where families can make memories, and that is so important.

“I am trying not to think about the actual climb and decent too much as I am not a big fan of heights, but I will grit my teeth and do it with my daughter. I can’t comprehend what it is like to lose a child and I just had to do something to help such a wonderful charity.

“Pubs, clubs, traders and business in Allestree and the City Centre have been showing their support for my challenge by holding fundraising events and collections and Rams legend Kevin Hector has very graciously agreed to help. Our Justgiving page is now active and anyone wishing to support this fine charity can just get in touch.”

Places are still available for people to sign up to the sponsored event and all money raised comes to our charity.

Rainbows event organiser Ali Furlong said: “We are delighted that Ged and Isobel are taking part in the event to help Rainbows and on behalf of everyone at the hospice, I thank them for their support. We receive very little funding so without the support of people like Ged and Isobel, we wouldn’t be able to open our doors. I hope they inspire others to sign up and take on the challenge.”

People can abseil between 8.30am and 5.30pm. Entry is £20 and we are encouraging participants to raise sponsorship money. Children under 11 are not permitted to take part. To get involved, contact Ali on 01509 638006, email [email protected] or visit rainbows.co.uk/abseil2019
