MATT’S 300 MILE CHALLENGE FOR RAINBOWS

MARCH 7 2012

Matt Cartwright has set himself a challenge this year – 12 half marathons and the Coast2Coast cycle ride, and all the money he raises from this mammoth undertaking will be donated to Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

This amount of running is taking a lot of training. Matt estimates he’s spending around eight hours every week out on the road or in the gym.

When asked why he chose the Loughborough hospice Matt said: “I heard about Rainbows through my workplace, Caterpillar, and wanted to raise money for them as the work they do is so important. I also thought that the money I hope to raise would make a big difference to them.”

Patricia Brookes, Head of Fundraising at Rainbows, said: “We are always delighted when supporters raise money for us, whether by running, cycling, boating or holding more sedate events, so we were especially thrilled when Matt told us about his challenge. We wish him all the best with his endeavours and look forward to an update after his first few events.”

Matt is planning to run six half marathons this spring, complete the Coast2Coast cycle challenge in the early summer, then follow up with six more half marathons in the autumn.

He has already taken part in two races, the Portsmouth Coastal Half Marathon in February and the Milton Keynes Half Marathon on 4 March. The first was no ordinary half marathon though, with portions of the course being off-road, on grass and even a shingle beach.

Speaking after the Portsmouth run Matt said: “For a first race it was mentally and physically tough, considering the weather and terrain, but I’m pleased I completed the race without incident and look forward to my next race.”
