What qualifications do I need to work with children and young people?

To work on the Care Team as a Health Care Assistant you need either a relevant child/health care NVQ level two or three, or NNEB qualification.

To work on the Rainbows nursing team you will need the RSCN (Registered Sick Children’s Nurse), RGN, (Registered General Nurse) or RNLD (Learning Disability nurse) qualification.  In addition, those interested in applying for a Band 5 post will need to have a minimum of one year’s post registration experience (RSCN only) and a minimum of 2 year’s post registration experience for non RSCN qualifications. Ideally you will also have post registration experience working with children/young people with complex needs. For Band 6 roles, a minimum of 4 years post registration experience and experience of working with children and/or young adults with complex needs is essential.

What about other positions?

Qualifications, skills and experience required for other clinical, fundraising, administrative and retail positions are dependent on the vacancy that we are looking to fill.  Full details will be included in the job specification and person specification which you will be able to access as part of the vacancy.

I am due to qualify shorty/am newly qualified, when would be the right time for me to apply for a job as a nurse at Rainbows?

Rainbows is a nurse led unit and as such, there is an added level of responsibility placed on our nurses.  Furthermore, Rainbows is a very different environment to the hospital ward and for these reasons we require that our newly recruited nurses have either demonstrable post registration experience gained in an acute setting, or experience of caring for children or young people with complex care needs gained within a similar setting to Rainbows, in order to equip them with the skills necessary to care for our children and young people.

What shift patterns do the nurses and care team staff work?

Nurses and Health Care Assistants work a combination of shifts which are allocated on a rota basis, to include early, late and night shifts. The Care Team operates a 24 hour cover using the following shifts: Early: 7.30am – 3pm, Late: 2pm – 9.30pm, Night: 7.30pm – 8.00am and Long Day: 7.30am – 8pm and twilights.

We do not operate set shifts.  The rota is written to cover a four week block and is available in advance.  Staff are entitled to make some requests. We do not operate term time only contracts.

There is a two tier nurse on call system that involves Band 5 and 6 nurses being on call for shift coverage in extreme situations and a senior nurse (Band 7 or above) being on call for advice and support for the Shift Co-ordinator and Care Team.

What are the roles and duties of a Health Care Assistant?

Health Care Assistants work as part of a team supporting children/young people and their families within the hospice setting. They liaise with families, the care team and other key agencies, to implement a plan of care to ensure the needs of the children/young people are met, and promote continuity of care at all times. They have the opportunity to work with children and young people with a variety of complex care needs and develop skills in palliative and end of life care. The role primarily involves meeting the day to day needs of the children/young people (personal care, feeding) and providing holistic care. This may involve organising and participating in outings/activities, and supporting siblings.

What training and development is on offer?

Rainbows is committed to staff training and development.  All new staff joining complete a full induction programme during their probationary period and have the continuous support of their line managers/mentors.  There is a rolling programme of training throughout the year and other development opportunities are also available and encouraged.

I have a child/relative who uses the services of the hospice (including post bereavement), can I apply for a job?

Due to confidentiality and conflict of interest issues, it is Rainbows policy that applications for positions will not normally be accepted from relatives of the children and young people who currently access Rainbows, or who have accessed Rainbows within the last 2 years.  Relatives may be able to volunteer at external fundraising events or in one of the hospice charity shops.  Applications of this nature will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

I have experienced a bereavement in the last six months, can I apply for a job on the care team?

Due to the sensitive nature of the work carried out at the hospice, it is hospice policy that applications for positions involved with the delivery of care will not normally be accepted from individuals who have experienced bereavement in the last 6 months.

I have not worked in a nurse led environment, please can you explain the differences?

Working in a nurse led environment means that care is planned and managed by nurses. Doctors are not on-site 24/7. Outside of 9 – 5 hours the shift co-ordinator may be the most senior person in the building. However, you would not be unsupported – at Rainbows there is a senior nurse (Band 7/8) on call 24/7 for advice and support so there is always someone more experienced to talk to about any concerns. Where necessary, in exceptional circumstances they may also come into the hospice to provide additional support outside of normal working hours. 24/7 medical cover is provided by a team of GPs with specialist expertise in palliative care and they will come into the hospice at any time if needed.
