The Word: a setting of John 1-10 for 16 voices and instrumental ensemble
This will be a rehearsed recording and premier performance of the new oratorio by John Middleton
It is, in effect, the prequel to Middleton’s St John Passion, and it highlights the seeds of the subsequent conflict. From John 1-10, the composer has extracted a dramatic dialogue between Jesus and the religious authorities, with fluctuating reactions from the bystanders. We’ve heard that this man does miracles, but he’s a Galilean, the son of a carpenter…….Will the Word of God be heard and understood?
The music reflects these tensions, and solo voices are contrasted with contrapuntal choral sections. It is nevertheless approachable and tuneful, having its roots in traditional folk scales and ancient modes. There are also modern influences in the treatment of harmony which, combined with frequent changes of tonality and overlapping rhythms, gives the work its energy
John’s music has been described as ‘having an individual voice’ – don’t miss the experience!
